Holmes (brain surgery), Erik Compton (heart transplant), Paul Azinger (cancer) and Shelley Hamlin (cancer)...WEEKS DURING THE MONTHS January to May: It's nearly summer but unruly weather conditions still plague faithful golfers; here are my favorite survival tips until good weather arrives: Read a golf book, preferably bio or historical; use a long pole across the shoulders and make shoulder turns to retain length and stay supple; get an automatic ball return putting cup and putt on smooth carpet; get recommendations on who to see to fix a swing problem; dream of better weather ahead. WEEK OF June 10-17: My picks for this week’s U.S. Open favorites, in order: Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson. WEEK OF June 24-30 The tour is in the Washington, D.C., area; my favorite major results from there include the 1964 U.S. Open, 1997 U.S. Open and 2011 U.S. Open. WEEKS OF July 15 and 22 The golf world was focused on Carnoustie and St. Andrews, Scotland, the past two weeks. My favorite “feels” about being in Scotland: the comfy feel of the air, the feel of history, the feel of the people, the simple feel of enjoying life. WEEKS OF August 12 and 19: The golf world is focused on St. Louis and the PGA this week. As an Illinois native, my favorite St. Louis-area “things” are the Cardinals, toasted ravioli, The Arch, Anheuser-Busch brewery, Laclede's Landing, Meramac Caverns. WEEK OF August 26: The golf world is focused on Ridgewood C.C. in New Jersey this week. The top moments in Ridgewood’s pro events are Tom Watson winning the Sr. PGA in 2001 over Jim Thorpe; Trevino outdueling Nicklaus in the 1990 U.S. Senior Open, the U.S. winning the 1935 Ryder Cup, and I was part of the editorial team that put together the 1990 U.S. Senior Open program...WEEKS OF September 3 and 10: The golf world was focused on Boston last week. The top moments in its golf history are Francis Ouimet’s epic 1913 U.S. Open triumph, the American Ryder Cup victory in 1999, and the dramatic 1963 U.S. Open in which Arnold Palmer was again a playoff loser. WEEKs OF September 17 and 24: The golf world was focused on France and the Ryder Cup last week. My big question going in was: Will the U.S. team’s chummy, winning effort from 2016 hold together on foreign soil, or will they lose focus and fall back into blaming something other than bad play for a loss? The early result is that bickering and dissension have been stirred up. WEEKS of October 1 to November 26: My favorite elements about fall golf: The freshest air of the year; less sunscreen to put on; hot drinks--cocoa or a libation; fewer golfers; colorful foliage; firmer golf course; long sleeves promote swing control!.
